                        CURRENT NEWS(updated 4/23/2012):

                        “Mamma Mia, Pets Are Free-a”
                        will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This Mother’s Day, families across Hempstead Town will celebrate their love for moms.
On Saturday, May 19, 2012, the town invites everyone to salute mothers by adopting a cuddly cat or friendly dog. After all, nothing says “I love you, mom” better than a loving canine or feline companion.

“Whether you’re a mom with room in your heart and home for a new pet or you just want to celebrate Mother’s Day with the love of a cuddly companion, now is a great time to adopt,” stated Animal Shelter Director Cynthia Iacopella. “I invite moms and all animal lovers to come to the animal shelter on May 19 th and enjoy the love of a new furry friend without the expenses that ordinarily accompany pet adoption. “All adopted animals will receive free rabies vaccinations, spaying/neutering and microchipping. When combined with the waived adoption fee, this is a savings of at least $100!

Prospective pet adopters are also encouraged to bring treats and/or toys for the shelter animals; all those who do so will be eligible for a door prize. There will be raffles and baked goods for sale, with proceeds benefiting the “Tails of Hope Fund,” an organization helping to fund extraordinary medical surgeries for dogs and cats.
“Mamma Mia, Pets Are Free-a” will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
If you are not interested in adopting a pet at this time, there are still many ways you can help dogs and cats in need. Shelter volunteers help care for the animals, while pet fosterers temporarily “adopt” a pet to help it become acclimated to a home environment.
The Hempstead Town Animal Shelter is located at  3320 Beltagh Avenue in  Wantagh . For more information, call the Shelter at (516) 785-5220 or visit www.toh.li/animal-shelter. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Hempstead Town Hosts Series of Senior Citizens' Crime Prevention Seminars, Free Brochure Available
Senior citizens have been the main target of a recent spate of “distraction” burglaries and robberies in local communities. To prepare and educate our golden aged residents about protecting themselves from dangerous criminal activity, Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and the town’s Department of Public Safety kicked off a series of Senior Citizens’ Crime Prevention Seminars that began on January 6 th at the East Meadow Senior Center.
Murray, along with members of the Hempstead Town Board, announced a schedule of dates and times for Hempstead Town’s Senior Citizens’ Crime Prevention Seminars. All seminars are free of charge, and open to all senior residents living in the Town of Hempstead.
“I urge all senior citizens to take advantage of this free educational safety seminar,” Murray said. “Simple prevention measures that will be discussed during the seminars can protect our residents and keep them out of harm’s way.”
“Distraction burglaries” typically involve multiple criminals targeting seniors at their homes.  Usually, one person diverts the senior citizen’s attention at the front door with a bogus service or sales pitch, while another breaks into the home and steals money and/or valuable items. These valuable seminars educate seniors about what to watch for, what to avoid and how to protect themselves from these criminals.
A free senior citizen crime prevention brochure is also available for residents. It can be obtained by calling the Hempstead Town Department of Public Safety at (516) 538-1900. The brochure will also be distributed at the seminars.
In the case of inclement weather, check with individual senior centers on event dates by calling the phone numbers listed. The seminar schedule is as follows:
